Auriga may be my favorite constellation because it is so obviously a shepherd in spite of its Roman depiction as a charioteer. What would a charioteer be doing with a mother goat and several kids in his arms?
The root letters of Auriga mean shepherd. The star names have significance as well: Capella, the she goat; Gedi, the kid; Menkalinon, band or chain of the goats.
Shepherds have been prominent in many cultures since earliest times. It is no surprise to find a shepherd as a starry constellation reminding us of the Creator's care, provision, and protection of his children.
"The LORD is my shepherd," Psalm 23:1.
"He tends his flock like a shepherd: He gathers the lambs in his arms and carries them close to his heart," Isaiah 40:11.
"I am the good shepherd," John 10:14.
