We have lived here ten years and this is the first we've seen poke berry on our place. The plant first appeared last year. This year it had fruit. Poke berry ink is said to have been used by Thomas Jefferson when he wrote the Declaration of Independence, so I decided to make a little. I hadn't played with pokeberry ink since I was a kid back in Maryland.
First use, the ink was bright magenta. After it sat for several weeks, it changed to a rich rust, as you can see above. The water had evaporated, so I put water on my brush and used it like watercolor paint. You can read its many other names in this Wikipedia article.
