This year for the first time I have encountered a mysterious ice phenomenon. When the temperature is below freezing, and there may or may not be frost on the ground, here and there along my walk I find dead twigs with a white formation on them. From a distance it looks like snow, but up close the white formation proves to be beautiful ice crystals. Sometimes they look like cotton candy; others times like a frozen waterfall.
Today I did a web search for "ice on dead twigs." Sure enough, other people have seen this phenomenon. I find it is called Haareis or Hair Ice. Click here to see some excellent photos.
