In the past I've said I hate insects—mosquitos, biting flies, etc., but today I actually felt hate. I'm referring to slugs, which aren't insects but are giant pests. I've dispatched hundreds from my garden, but this is the first time I have actually hated them.
Since the iris first came up this spring the slugs have feasted on them—almost to the point where I wondered if they would ever bloom. Now that they are blooming, the slugs climb the stems to about half way up and eat a big hole so that the stem collapses with the weight of the flowers above. Witness photo below. I got great delight in using my garden clippers to cut the culprits in half so that their guts ran out.
