Thanksgiving is the unique holiday in America for which the primary purpose is to give thanks. It's an opportunity for humility, for admitting that we owe Someone for the good we enjoy.
But, long before the rusts, golds, and oranges of Thanksgiving have faded, they are pushed aside by the gaudy scarlet of another god. That god is Money and his prophet is Santa. This god seeks no thanks. He gives no good gifts of nature. The god of money is all about More. He entices people by placing before their eyes and ears Things: things bigger, prettier, stronger, faster than what they already have.
People think the worst that this god can do is withhold things, but they are wrong. The worst is to lead them into a frenzied search for things so that they loose sight of love, kindness, sharing, helping, and thankfulness. And when they reach the end of life, all the collected Things go poof! and they have sent nothing ahead to greet them on the other side.
